Essential therapy to help Sderot residents deal with ongoing trauma

For more than two decades, Sderot residents have been subject to regular missile attacks from the adjacent Gaza Strip. Children flee from playgrounds to saferooms, and families cower in stairwells as rockets explode nearby. The tense security situation has left many residents in a chronic state of trauma, suffering from anxiety, depression, PTSD, insomnia, fear of noise, nightmares, impairment of parental abilities, and bedwetting among children.

Sderot’s Resilience Center aims to change the paradigm from passive to proactive, from trauma to resilience.

At the center, residents receive therapy free of charge, take part in community resilience programs, and prepare for future emergencies. The Center also acts as an “emergency room” for emotional trauma victims after an attack, proactively reaching out to residents in areas where rockets hit and providing first aid emotional support to citizens in need.

To provide additional support to community members, especially those who avoid traditional therapy fearing stigma, the Sderot Animal-assisted Therapy Center was established as part of the Resilience Center. The animal-assisted therapy helps bypass defenses and encourages patients to talk about their emotions without feeling exposed and vulnerable.

The population of Sderot is growing, and the situation remains tense, increasing the demand for the Center’s services.

We need your support to offer the following treatment packages to meet community needs:

  • Individual therapy package: 24 treatment sessions (including animal-assisted therapy) at a cost of 7,200 ILS per individual. Target—150 individuals
  • Family therapy package: 30 treatment sessions, at a cost of 9,000 ILS per family. Target—50 families
  • Soldier therapy package: 10 treatment sessions, at a cost of 6,000 ILS per soldier. Target—30 soldiers
  • Group animal-assisted therapy package for schools: 30 group sessions, at a cost of 9,000 ILS per group. Target—50 groups
  • Individual animal-assisted therapy package for children with special needs: 30 treatment sessions, at a cost of 9,000 ILS per group. Target—25 groups

Purchasing equipment and animals for the Animal Assisted Therapy Center:

  • Habitat development and supplies: 44,000 ILS
  • Furniture and supplies for treatment rooms: 41,400 ILS
  • Animals (birds, goats, chickens, and turtles): 19,000 ILS
