Help the Jerusalem area forests recover

Long before environmentalism went mainstream, ancient Jewish traditions recognized the importance of trees in our world.

The Tu Bishvat holiday is like a Jewish Valentine’s Day for trees, celebrating trees as they begin to bloom after winter dormancy. This year on Tu Bishvat, KKL-JNF is helping Jerusalem area forests recover from a devastating summer fire.

Forests contribute so much to our world, providing beauty, recreation venues, and the very air we breathe. They are a welcoming meeting place for all religious and ethnic groups in Israel. They are also a key element in mitigating the impact of climate change, helping to conserve water, preserve soil, support wildlife, lower air temperature, and reduce the heat intensity of the greenhouse effect.

In August 2021, the Jerusalem hills forests were devasted by a series of virulent forest fires that burned approximately 3000 acres of forests, and destroyed trees, vegetation, wildlife, and unique regional flora. “We battled the fire all day, a fire the size of which we had not seen in decades,” said Gidi Bashan, the KKL-JNF Jerusalem Mountains Manager. “The trees we lost were hundred-year-old pines and natural woodland that has developed throughout the years”.

With the changing climate and fiercer fires, KKL-JNF needs your help to make the Jerusalem hills green again. Your donation will enable KKL-JNF to remove hazards, take proactive steps to prevent erosion, and implement best practices in forest management. Together, we’ll make sure that the ancient forests, conservation areas, and green lands lost in the mega-fire are restored to their former glory.

KKL-JNF forests shower residents with love— help us return that love to the forests.
